Tucked into a side street near Isetan, Fukumimi serves some of the most satisfying yakitori in Shinjuku. Here is what to order, when to go, and whether it lives up to the hype.

First Impressions

You will smell Fukumimi before you see it. The charcoal smoke drifting out of this tiny yakitori joint near Isetan is the best advertisement it could ask for. Inside: a counter, a few tables, and a grill master who has clearly been doing this for decades.

What to Order

Go for the omakase set if it is your first visit — eight skewers chosen by the chef, moving from classic negima (chicken and leek) to tsukune (meatball) and the day’s specials. The shio (salt) seasoning lets the charcoal do the talking; tare (sauce) is richer and sweeter.

Practical Tips

No reservations for small groups, so arrive before 6 pm or be ready to wait. Cash preferred. Budget around ¥3,000–4,000 per person with a drink or two.
