If you’re exploring Shinjuku, you can’t miss Golden Gai. Located right next to the neon chaos of Kabukicho, this is a completely unique slice of Tokyo’s past. For fans of the “Yakuza” (Ryu Ga Gotoku) game series, this is holy ground—so many iconic stories happen right here.
But what is Golden Gai?

It’s a district of several narrow alleys, some barely wide enough for one person to pass through. In this tiny space, over 200 mini-bars and izakayas are packed together. Each bar is tiny, typically seating only 5-10 people, with some larger ones fitting just a dozen.
Golden Gai Highlights
Nostalgic (Showa-Era) Vibe: The Showa-era atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve time-traveled. The messy, tangled wires and old-school light tubes create an authentic, gritty charm.
Rich & Unique Nightlife: A perfect spot for a nightcap. Each bar is unique, often run by a single owner with their own theme (old records, movies, manga, etc.).
Photographer’s Dream: The narrow alleys, overlapping signs, and cinematic shadows make this a top spot for moody, atmospheric photos.
“Yakuza” Game Pilgrimage: This is the real-life location that inspired the iconic settings in the Yakuza games.
The Atmosphere: An “Old Movie” Set
This is not a clean, polished tourist attraction. It’s an old neighborhood defined by “accumulated time.”

At night, the light and shadows, combined with the slightly rusty, weathered walls and doors, create a vivid, cinematic feel—like walking onto the set of an old movie. For us travelers, it’s an incredible experience and a fantastic photo-op.
The magic of Golden Gai is its social atmosphere. Because most bars are just a single counter, you’re sitting right in front of the owner. Many are incredibly welcoming and love to chat with guests about everything from art and travel to music and life, often over a 500 Yen table charge that kicks off the conversation.
