They say, “If you haven’t been to Donki, you haven’t been to Japan.”
Don Quijote (Donki) is Japan’s discount king, famous for its chaotic, jungle-like displays and catchy theme song. While there are many stores in Tokyo, the Shinjuku Kabukicho branch is special.
Located in the heart of the neon-lit nightlife district, this store is open 24 hours a day. It is the ultimate “Treasure Island” for night owls.
Whether you finished dinner late or just want to avoid the daytime crowds, here is your survival guide to navigating its 4 packed floors.
🏢 Floor Guide: What is Hidden Where?
Donki can be confusing. Use this cheat sheet to find exactly what you need.
B1F: Souvenirs & Daily Goods (The “Yummy” Floor)
- What to buy: This is souvenir heaven. Stock up on bulk packs of KitKats (look for the unique flavors!), Matcha chocolates, and local Japanese instant ramen.
- Vibe: Grocery store meets snack paradise.
1F: Characters & Trending Items (The “Kawaii” Floor)
- What to buy: As soon as you walk in, you’ll be surrounded by cuteness. This floor is dedicated to Sanrio (Hello Kitty, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll) and other popular anime characters.
- Hot Tip: The seasonal and best-selling viral products are usually displayed right here near the entrance.
2F: Cosmetics & Color Contacts (The “Beauty” Floor)
- What to buy: A massive selection of Japanese drugstore cosmetics (Canmake, Kate, etc.).
- Highlights: You can find everything from famous Color Contact Lenses (very popular in Japan) to designer perfumes and skincare essentials like Anessa sunscreen and Curél lotion.
3F: Medicine & Travel Essentials (Tax-Free Counter)
- What to buy: Need a new suitcase because you bought too much? Go here. This floor also stocks Japanese medicine (pain relief patches, eye drops) and travel goods.
- ⚠️ IMPORTANT: The Tax-Free Counter is on this floor!
4F: Pre-Owned Luxury & Fashion (Tax-Free Counter)
- What to buy: This is for the treasure hunters. You can dig for Pre-Owned (Second-Hand) Luxury Bags (Louis Vuitton, Chanel, etc.), branded watches, and Zippo lighters. You might just find your dream bag at a fraction of the retail price.
- ⚠️ IMPORTANT: There is also a Tax-Free Counter on this floor.
🌙 Why Go at Night? (The Insider Tip)
Shinjuku never sleeps, and neither does this store.
We highly recommend visiting after 10:00 PM.
- Less Crowded: The daytime rush is intense. Late at night, you can browse the narrow aisles much more comfortably.
- Vibe: Stepping out of the store into the glowing neon lights of Kabukicho with a bag full of snacks is a quintessential Tokyo experience.
