WOW: Hill of the Buddha Highlights

Tadao Ando’s Design: A masterpiece by the world-famous architect. The 13.5m Buddha is hidden inside a hill, revealing only its head from the outside.
The “Reveal” Journey: You must pass through a water garden and a 40m dark tunnel before seeing the statue—a carefully designed spiritual ritual.
Seasonal Beauty: Surrounded by 150,000 lavender plants in summer (purple) and a blanket of white snow in winter.
Surreal Surroundings: The site also features life-sized Moai Statues and a Stonehenge replica, making it a unique photo spot.

1. The “Half-Hidden” Buddha

Unlike traditional statues that sit high on pedestals, this 13.5m Buddha is buried within a hill planted with lavender. From the outside, you only see the head floating above the landscape. It is a humble, mysterious approach to divinity.

2. The Water Garden (Boundary)

Before entering, you must walk around a rectangular Water Garden. This signifies crossing the boundary from the “ordinary world” to the “sacred world.”

  • Winter Note: In winter, the water freezes and is covered in snow, creating a perfect, silent white void.

3. The 40m Tunnel (Purification)

This is the hill of the buddha guide0002 Image

You enter a long, dim concrete tunnel (40 meters). As you walk through the darkness, you can see the light at the end growing brighter.

  • The Climax: When you reach the end, the ceiling opens up to the sky, and the Buddha is bathed in natural light. The contrast is breathtaking.

❄️ Summer vs. Winter: When to Go?

  • Summer (July-Aug): The hill turns vibrant purple with 150,000 lavender plants. The contrast between the grey concrete and purple flowers is stunning.
  • Winter (Dec-Mar): The hill becomes a pure white snowscape. The Buddha wears a “hat of snow.” The atmosphere is incredibly quiet and Zen-like.

A Traveler’s Reflection:

“Some say this is ‘pseudo-monumental,’ but once you understand Ando’s intent, you see the compassion in his rebellion. The Buddha’s ‘hidden’ posture is a comfort to the dead and a confession to the living. Death doesn’t need to be grand; it can be a sigh amidst the lavender or the white snow.”

🚌 Critical Access Guide (The Transport Trap)

The Hill of the Buddha is located inside the Makomanai Takino Cemetery, which is far from the city center.

Option 1: Public Transport (Recommended)

  1. Take the Subway Namboku Line to Makomanai Station (真駒內).
  2. Transfer to Bus No. 108 (specifically for Takino Reien/Cemetery).
  3. Warning: Bus schedules change seasonally. Check the “Chuo Bus” timetable in advance.

Option 2: Taxi (Expensive & Risky)

  • Cost: A taxi from Sapporo city center costs about 8,000 JPY one way.
  • The Trap: It is easy to get there, but very hard to get a taxi back. Uber/Go apps often do not work in this remote area.
  • Advice: If you take a taxi, arrange for the driver to wait for you, or strictly plan your return using the bus schedule.
